Meaning: The meditation of Mary on the Passion after the Ascension of Christ

Explanation: The pictura of a dove or turtledove next to the motto Gemit dilectum suum (She regrets her beloved) is used to recall the fact that, as the abstract encapsulates, “the Blessed Virgin, after the Ascension of her Son to Heaven, meditated on his bitter Passion with all her heart”.

The construction of this metaphor is based on three principles: the Christological interpretation of the verse from the Song of Songs My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places of the mountainside; the verse from Isaiah I did meditate as a dove, which is the biblical quotation chosen to complete the emblem; and the moans of this bird upon losing its mate.

Considering all this, Ginther explains: “The groaning dove or lonely turtledove is an image of the Sorrowful Mother of Christ, now deprived of her Son and Spouse. After the glorious Ascension to Heaven of the soul of her beloved son and spouse, she moaned inexpressible groans throughout her life when recalling his bitter Passion and despicable death in the cross”.
